Their logic: autonomous AI agents will generate millions of micropayments, driving demand for native tokens like Solana’s SOL. The reasoning is elegant. The logic is flawed. I’ve seen this script before. In 2017, EOS promised a world computer. In 2021, Axie Infinity promised a play-to-earn economy. Both collapsed under the weight of their own narrative. This one is no different—unless you audit the incentives.

Enter blockchain. They cite Coinbase’s x402 protocol, now under the Linux Foundation’s stewardship, as the standard for agent-to-agent settlement. They highlight Solana’s high throughput and low fees as a prime example of a Layer 1 capable of supporting this future. The conclusion is clear: expand positions in altcoins, particularly those with strong L1 performance, to capture the growth of Agentic AI.

This is not a technical paper. It is an investment thesis wrapped in a narrative. As a due diligence analyst with a PhD in cryptography, I treat narratives as liabilities. The technology is just a feature that hasn’t been stress-tested at scale.

Core: Systematic Teardown Let’s start with the technology. Micropayments are not a new problem. The Bitcoin Lightning Network was designed for this. Ethereum’s state channels attempted it. The thesis that blockchain will facilitate machine-to-machine payments is plausible. But the market has already priced that possibility into SOL at a $50 billion valuation. Any positive development must exceed current expectations to move the price. That requires exponential growth in agent activity within the next 12–18 months. Given the current rate of adoption, that is unlikely.

Another blind spot the article captures is the network effect. If one blockchain becomes the default for agent payments, its token could become a functional currency for the AI economy. Solana has the early lead, with projects like The Graph and Arweave already moving toward agent-specific services. But the field is crowded: Ethereum’s L2s (Arbitrum, Optimism), Avalanche, and even new entrants like Sui and Aptos offer similar value propositions. Liquidity fragmentation is already a problem in DeFi. The article’s endorsement of “altcoins” broadly is a lazy generalization. It does not differentiate between infrastructure and marketing.
